Continuing Education Program Offered on Animal Abuse and Domestic Violence - MAY 6

Janice E. Sojka, V.M.D., M.S., and consultant Lesley Ashworth will lead a presentation on the link between animal abuse and domestic violence, as a continuing education session offered by the YWCA Domestic Violence Intervention and Prevention Program. The presentation will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 6, at the YWCA, 605 N. 6th Street, Lafayette. Sojka is an associate professor in the Purdue University Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. Ashworth formerly worked in the domestic violence unit of the Columbus, Ohio, city attorney’s office and is now a consultant for the American Humane Association, the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, and other groups. Studies confirm the connection between interpersonal violence and the abuse of animals. For those who work with victims of violence, it is important to understand the connection. Incorporating information relating to pets in assessment tools, intake questionnaires and investigations can result in early detection and effective intervention. Discussion will cover intervention in family violence situations with an interdisciplinary approach that considers families holistically, including the role animals play in the family dynamic. This training session may be most appropriate for those who work in a related profession. However, all interested adults ages 18 and up are welcome to attend. One continuing education unit is available. The cost to attend is $8 per person. Attendees should bring their own lunch. To register, call 765-742-0075 by May 4.
