Indiana Coalition for the Arts to host Arts Day at the Statehouse January 26

Arts Day celebration to include 2010 CALA awards honoring four Indiana arts leaders

Artists, arts educators and arts administrators from across Indiana will gather at the Indiana Statehouse on Tuesday, January 26 to promote the diversity of the arts in the state. The annual Arts Day celebration, coordinated by the Indiana Coalition for the Arts, will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Statehouse Rotunda.

As part of the celebration, four outstanding Hoosiers will receive the Community Arts Leadership Awards (CALA) for their work in enhancing Hoosiers’ lives through the arts. They also will receive a one-of-a-kind glass art award, kiln-crafted by Warren County artist Kathleen Kitch. The award presentation is at 10:00 a.m.

The CALA recipients also will be recognized before the members of the Indiana House and Senate that day. Senator Brent Hershman (R-Monticello) will carry the resolution in the Senate, and Representatives Sheila Klinker (D-Lafayette), Matt Pierce (D-Bloomington), and Eric Koch (R-Bedford) are the House sponsors.

The CALA Award is an annual honor. This year’s recipients include:

  • Arts Advocate: Joy Bailey, Hoosier Salon Board of Directors, Monticello
  • Arts Administrator: Eric Rogers, Executive Director, Arts Place, Inc., Portland
  • Arts Volunteer: Miriam Robeson, Attorney at Law, Flora
  • Arts Educator: Judy Ward, Visual and Performing Arts Cooperative, Wabash County Schools, Wabash

The Indiana Coalition for the Arts was created in 2006 from the merger of the Arts Alliance Indiana (founded 1978) and Indiana Advocates for the Arts (founded 1980) to better advocate for adequate public arts support and act on behalf of the arts in Indiana. The coalition also includes the Indiana Coalition for the Arts Foundation, founded to increase the capacity of Indiana artists and arts organizations through education, technical assistance and information services.  For more information and to register for Arts Day, visit www.inartscoalition.org.

Activities of the Tippecanoe Arts Federation are provided, in part, with support from the Indiana Arts Commission, a state agency, with funds from the Indiana General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts.
