First Annual African Cultural Celebration of Music, Dance, Art and Spoken Word to be held at Ivy Tech Community College-Lafayette
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and in anticipation of Black History month, Ivy Tech Community College-Lafayette will be hosting the first annual African American Cultural Celebration of Music, Dance, Art and Spoken Word. The event will take place Friday, January 13, 2012 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm on the Lafayette campus. This event is free and open to the public.
Those in attendance will have the opportunity to experience various aspects of African American Culture, including poetry readings, singers, storytelling, and art. Artist Derrick Burnett will be showcasing original works of art in the Grand Hall of Ivy Hall. Samples of soul food, donated by D&R BBQ and Catering will be available, along with light refreshments and dessert donated by Catering by Debbie .
The main ceremony will be preceded with an invocation by Dr. Harold Pettigrew from Hope International and will feature a keynote address by Ms. Sadie Harper-Scott, President of the Lafayette chapter of the NAACP. Also featured will be a performance by Beautiful Soul of Gary Indiana. The ceremony will take place in the North Central Health Services Auditorium at 5:30pm.
Volunteer opportunities are available for this event, along with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service at Imagination Station on January 16th from 8:30am to 12:00am. Those wishing to volunteer for either event may contact Danielle Varrassi at dvarrassi@ivytech.edu or 765-269-5446.
